Welcome to English

Curriculum

As a department, we aim to provide a safe, stimulating and effective learning environment for all pupils. Within English, pupils are supported and challenged to develop key skills in English and Literacy, working to become informed and independent learners.

In S1, pupils will have 4 periods of English per week. 1 period a week will be focussed alternately on the S1 close reading and writing scheme.

In S2, pupils will have 4 periods of English a week. 1 period a week will focus alternately on close reading and writing skills.

In S3, pupils will have 4 periods of English per week. S3 pupils will also follow the National 4 curriculum. Throughout this year, pupils will undergo 4 assessments in Analysis and Evaluation (reading and listening), Creation and Production (writing and talking). As part of the National 4 curriculum, pupils are also required to complete an Added Value Unit examining two texts. 1 period a week will be used as a personal study period for this.

In S4, pupils will have 4 periods of English per week and will be working at National 4 or National 5. The National 4 course is an internally assessed course comprised of unit assessments and an Added Value Unit. In National 5, pupils will study a range of texts, including a Scottish text. National 5 pupils will also be required to pass unit assessments. As part of their course, there is also an externally assessed exam and writing folio.

In S5, pupils will go on to sit the National 5 or Higher course. There will be 6 periods a week for English. Pupils will study a range of texts, including a Scottish text.
