In S1, pupils have the opportunity to experience a wide range of new and familiar activities. They will be challenged to work both individually and with others, in both and indoor and outdoor environment. Pupils receive two 50 minute periods and are expected to wear their PE kit for both. The Alva Academy PE kit consists of a black or white t-shirt; shorts, tracksuit bottoms or leggings; and trainers. Outdoor lessons may require a sweatshirt or jacket. In S1, pupils will cover: Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Creative Dance, Fitness, Gymnastics, Hockey, Indoor Games, Rugby, Scottish Country Dancing, Table Tennis and Volleyball.
In S2, pupils have the opportunity to continue on with their physical education experience from S1. While still being challenged to work both individually and with others, pupils are given more responsibility over their own learning. Pupils receive two 50 minute periods and are expected to follow the same PE kit rules from S1. One of these periods follows a core set of activities which every pupil completes. This is similar to the activities in S1 with the addition of softball. The other period, pupils are given the opportunity to choose from; individual activities (Badminton, Table Tennis, Fitness, Athletics, Trampolining etc), team activities (Football, Basketball, Softball, Dodgeball, Volleyball etc) or aesthetic activities (Dance, Cheer, Aerobics, Fitness) and will follow this route for the full year.
In S3, pupils are given even more responsibility over their Physical Education experience. Again, pupils receive two 50 minute periods and are expected to follow the same PE kit rules from S1 & S2. Pupils now receive two choice periods, rather than one core and one choice. The choice columns again fall under the headings of Individual activities, Team activities and Aesthetic activities. There may also be the option of a pick’n’mix column which consists of activities from all 3.
